Description
JJ Collins Marine Park is a Columbia County park only accessible for boat-in camping. Canoeists can put in at the Gilbert Boat Ramp on Sauvie Island about two miles downstream from the island, then paddle up the channel to the island. It makes a great beginner overnight introduction to canoe camping, with just enough distance to make it an adventure. Although it is upstream, the current is typically minimal. Pay close attention to the (small, but present) tides on the river as well as wind conditions. We've done this trip on multiple years and had a great experience every time, even with minimally experienced canoeists. The island has a dock on either side to take out of the river, and some camping amenities including picnic tables and restrooms, although these are limited. Plan on wilderness camping if the more developed areas are full--there is plenty of space available on the island. There are opportunities for canoeing/exploring up the Gilbert River the next day on the trip back if longer canoe opportunities are desired.

Fees
$10/day pass required for all vehicles parking overnight at Gilbert Boat Ramp. The annual pass is only $30, so we have generally just purchased the annual pass rather than two one-day passes.
